What is a Learning Management System?

February 24, 2021

Rouben David, of CourseForMe.com, outlines the features and benefits of Learning Management Systems, whose use has become more vital during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Learning is a lifetime activity that starts from the beginning of one’s life and only ends when one stops breathing. Although there are different approaches to learning, the important thing is that learning is still carried out regardless of the approach. Moreover, in today’s world of digital and online learning it is important to understand how to learn and the different learning management systems (LMS).

Interestingly, learning management systems have featured in several beginner’s guides, tip sheets and other eLearning articles. However, many still don’t know what the term stands for, its benefits, functions and what-have-you. Hence, in this article, you will find out all it is to know about Learning Management Systems.

What is an LMS?

A Learning Management System is a software used for tracking, documenting, reporting, automating, and delivering educational courses. The system is generally important in learning and development of programs or training programs. The systems are designed to use reporting and analytical data to identify lapses in learning and training programs.

Apparently, these management systems are tailor-made for online learnings and they operate in web-browsers through a secure sign-on process. With these seamless systems, both tutor and students can have access to courses on the go while administrators can also track the progress of the learning program simultaneously.

Functions of LMS

While the overall use of Learning Management Systems is for tracking and managing learning projects, its functions can differ across each organization. Hence, how the learning management systems function depends majorly on users’ objectives, training strategies and their desired outcomes.

With the adoption of internet or online learning by the general populace, organizations now use learning management systems to train and equip their employees instead of the archaic person-to-person training classes. Most learning management systems have in-built eLearning tutoring tools which enable tutors to build online training materials all by themselves.

Some functions of LMS include:

Course Creation

With an LMS, you can easily create courses for other users. These include training materials in document, video or audio formats that can be properly arranged into modules to become a whole course. It also allows users to create surveys, quizzes and examinations to effectively assess learners’ performances.

Analytics and Reporting

These are other essential features of a learning management system that enable you to track online training initiatives. These analytics allow you to make more informed decisions about your courses whether they are still on track or they could make use of some adjustments.

Responsive Design

The design of LMS is cross-platform and responsive, giving everyone the ability to seamlessly interact with the system.

Social Learning Support

Most learning management systems make it possible for learners to interact with other learners on the same platform.

Learning Management Systems are essential tools that are useful in today’s digital world. The software applications are used across different industries to track, document, report, automating, and delivering eLearning courses.
