Lithium Ion Batteries
The Apple statement released on Tuesday comes after the Japanese government determined that three fires were caused as a direct result of three iPod fires caused by the device overheating while recharging. The investigation determined that the fires were caused by defective lithium-ion batteries.
Apple say that the defective devices were sold between September 2005 and December 2006 but the company did not disclose the name of the battery manufacturer.
Fortunately no one was hurt by the flaming iPods but the devices literally melted. Anyone in possession of the device should return it to get a new one.
There are millions of electronic rechargeable devices that use lithium-ion batteries and overheating has not been uncommon. Sony, Dell and Lenovo have all had problems between 2006 and 2007 and had to issue recalls.
So be warned, the next time you are listening to some hot, smoking tunes on your iPod Nano and you get a warm feeling in your pocket, it may literally be on fire.
