In a clear 336 to 176 victory MP's in the House of Common's have voted to allow human-animal embryo research to continue, unabated by conservatives and religious hold-outs.

The bill will regulate research using hybrid, or "admix" where the nuclei of animal cells are inserted into human eggs. The resulting embryos would be kept up to two weeks until the resulting stem cells could be harvested and used in research into disease prevention.

Health Minister Dawn Primarolo stated that no human "admix" embryo would be inserted into a woman or animal. The bill was also endorsed by Prime Minister Gordon Brown saying that this was a moral endeavor that could save thousands of lives.

Edward Leigh, the Ex Conservative MP is the main opposition leader to the Bill described the research as 'immoral.' Leigh has been criticized for his lack of understanding. Had science listened to the skeptics, according to Labour party's Chris Bryant, we would never have developed the smallpox vaccine. "They were wrong then, and you are wrong now," he said.

A separate attempt to ban "pure" hybrid embryos, that would mix a human egg with animal sperm or vice versa, was also defeated in the Commons by 286 votes to 223, a much slimmer government majority of 63.

All MPs are being given a free vote on four controversial parts of the bill after warnings that some Catholic MPs and cabinet ministers were ready to rebel.

I wish I could understand the position of people that want to stop medical science in it's tracks. We are talking about cells here, that is nothing more than a smudge on a petri dish, that could hopefully one day be the genesis for the prevention of horrible and crippling afflictions such as cancer and Parkinson's disease. I am glad to see that reason has triumphed over what really is tantamount to a science fiction like fantasy.

Still, I am sure those that think we will give birth to some sort of Frankenstein, werewolf hybrid creature will continue to scream in horror from the pews in the auditorium.
