Electronic Arts (EA) announced Monday that Zack Snyder, the director of Dawn of the Dead, 300, and the
upcoming Watchmen, has signed a three-game deal with the video game company.
Under the agreement, Snyder will develop 3 video games with
EA Los Angeles, with EA owning the rights to the games and potentially adapting
them into movies.
Steven Spielberg previously signed a similar deal with EA to
help develop three games, one of which, Boom Blox, has already released on the
Wii. The game has sold over 450,000 units, according to EA.
EA is likely banking on the wide appeal these directors have
with audiences, especially Snyder’s appeal to the teenage male market with his
film 300. While Spielberg’s excellent Boom Blox received positive reviews
from critics, it failed to be a blockbuster hit when it came to sales, even
with the famed director’s name on the box’s cover.
Snyder’s work on graphic novel and comic book adaptations
may translate more easily into a video game, so it’ll remain to be seen if what
he churns out is a critical darling, a chart-topper, or (ideally) both.
