YouTube Ban Lifted in Turkey

A court in Turkey has lifted the three month YouTube ban after sustained pressure from other non-blocked sites. Many companies had protested the ban by voluntarily blocking access to their own web sites.

The web protest included 412 blog and web sites essentially blocking the Turks from accessing their favorites such as the Turkish-English dictionary Zargan.com.

The action came after it was revealed that 853 websites had been blocked by the Turkish courts. The increased involvement in censorship by Turkey has hurt the nation's international image and these actions have been counter productive especially considering the Turkish application to become a member of the European Union.

Turkey first banned YouTube in March last year after Greek users had posted videos that stated that Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the modern Turkish state was a homosexual.
