Hasbro, the game company that owns the North American rights to Scrabble, the famous 70 year-old word game, is suing the creators of Scrabulous, the popular, though unauthorized, online version of the famous board game which is available online through Facebook.
Hasbro will sue the Agarwallas brothers, based in Calcutta India, for unspecified damages. In addition they have also requested that Facebook, the social networking giant, block the knock-off version of the game immediately. The knock-off, Scrabulous, has attracted over half a million daily users and has helped propel the social networking company.
Electronic Arts, in partnership with Hasbro, released an official version of Scrabble for American and Canadian gamers. Matell the owners of the rights to Scrabble outside the US have yet to weigh in on the suit.
This could end up being more than a triple word score for Hasbro, though many Facebook users have formed an advocacy group demanding that Scrabulous remain available to Facebook users.
