Blue H Make Floating Wind Turbines Look Like A Breeze

Blue H, A British company headquartered in Holland is about to throw caution to the wind by launching the world's first floating wind turbine. The prototype was launched in 2007 and proved to be very successful. The company is one of many in the race in trying to develop a fleet of floating platforms to create a wind farm capable of providing endless amounts electricity in deep oceans, away from the shore and far from the human eye.

The platform is designed to be anchored to the seabed at depths of up to a 1,000ft with chains allowing the platform to adjust to the prevailing conditions. The electricity generated is then piped ashore via a series of undersea cables.

Britain, and the North Sea in general, is seen as a key market for such technology because of the consistent, often severe winds around its coastline. In June, the UK government said that it would need to build up to 7,000 wind turbines at sea to help meet EU renewable energy targets.

The World Wind Energy Association has increased its prediction for 2010 and expects 160.000 MW to be installed by the end of 2010. It is expected that by the end of 2007 the installed capacity will exceed 90.000MW.

The first Blue H mobile platform is to be anchored 12 miles off the coast of Italy and should be in operation by the end of the month. The mobility factor is key, making it maneuverable provides flexibility while remaining less intrusive to the eye, the environment and to the many shipping lanes.
