Microsoft Opens the Kimono

The world’s biggest software company is baring its secrets. Well, maybe not quite all, but Microsoft is holding its fourth annual Microsoft Research Silicon Valley Road Show on May 22, an event that is open to the public. It’s an opportunity for Microsoft, which is often accused of lagging as an innovator, to show off the depth of its research team. With more than 800 scientists on the payroll at five research centers, the company operates an enviable R&D operation at a time when many competitors have cut back.

Thursday’s event will include keynote addresses by Rick Rashid, who oversees Microsoft worldwide research efforts, and Roy Levin, who set up Microsoft’s Mountain View, California research lab in 2001. There is also a morning event for high school students.

Doug Free, director of PR in Silicon Valley for Microsoft, says there will be more than a dozen demonstration and exhibits of Microsoft research, ranging from an Xbox360 game developed to get kids to program a virtual robot, to machine language translation of web pages, to advanced graphics and high-security networks.
