The solution? 118118, a British directory assistance company, wrapped the lampposts with a rugby-goalpost-like cushion on the street where the accidents commonly occur. A publicity stunt? Maybe. The bumpers were removed 24 hours later, but the debate rages on. Should such a precaution be put in action permanently? Last year New York State Senator Carl Kruger introduced a bill to ban wearing earphones in crosswalks in New York's large urban areas. The bill was never passed, but he has reintroduced it this year.
