Massively multiplayer online (MMO) game studio Turbine announced on Monday a new studio in Redwood City, California

The studio opening comes as the company brings in new hires: Dave Brevik, Jeff Lind, and Matt McKnight as creative director, engineering director, and studio director, respectively.

Turbine created and operates the MMORPGS Asheron’s Call, Dungeons & Dragons Online, and The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar (co-published by Midway in the U.S. and Codemasters in Europe). The company recently announced an expansion to The Lord of the Rings Online, Mines of Moria, which is due out November 18.

Turbine does not disclose numbers for their games, so there is little information on sales and subscription data, although Midway disclosed last year that The Lord of the Rings Online had sold more than 172,000 copies in the U.S. up to that point.

In a statement, Turbine CEO Jim Crowley said that the new studio will allow Turbine “to complement the outstanding talent we have on the East coast with the pool of extraordinary talent available on theWest coast.

Turbine, he said, “is fast becoming the place to be for those looking to create the new generation of cross platform MMOs.”
