According to a Screen Digest report, 75 percent of console games set for release between July and September belong to big-name game developers and publishers Electronic Arts and the recently formed Activision Blizzard.

EA’s dominance in games releases has to do, in large part, with such sports  franchises  as “Madden NFL 09” and “Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09.” In addition to these well-worn franchises, EA will also be pushing out more original titles such as “Spore” in September.

Activision Blizzard has also been busy, with big releases such as “Guitar Hero: On Tour” and licensed fare such as “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.”

The two companies have completely dominated the third quarter, and they won’t shy away much in the fourth, with a projected 40 percent of console games released between October and December belonging to EA and Activision Blizzard. The lower percent doesn’t mean fewer games, though; rather, other developers and publishers are simply ramping up their output for the holiday season.

EA will see releases of some original titles with survival horror “Left4Dead” and the action-adventure “Mirror’s Edge.” They will, of course, also be releasing their sure-to-be-mega-hit “Rock Band 2.”

Activision Blizzard plans to retread a familiar series with “Call of Duty: World at War,” “Spider-Man: Web of Shadows,” and “Crash Bandicoot: Mind Over Mutant,” along with a smattering of licensed titles. Additionally, they’ll be going head-to-head against EA with  music game release “Guitar Hero: World Tour.”

With these two companies dominating the market, at least in sheer number of games, other companies will have a rough time competing for precious shelf and advertising space.
