BlogHer, an online blogging network by women for women, received $5 million in series B funding as part of a new partnership with three NBC Universal properties.
The funding was led by Peacock Equity, a financial arm of NBC Universal, along with former investor Venrock Capital. BlogHer got $3.5 million from Venrock Capital in June 2007.
The partnership with NBC’s iVillage, Oxygen.com, and BravoTV.com will feature select content from BlogHer’s network of 2,200 women bloggers.
"I am incredibly excited to tap into this new online community and superserve both clients and consumers in today’s robust women’s marketplace,” said a statement from Lauren Zalaznick, president of Women and Lifestyle Entertainment networks for NBC Universal.
NBC Universal had already strongly tapped into the women’s marketplace when it acquired iVillage, an online network geared toward women, for $600 million in March 2006. The site, a leading women’s content network, claims over 16 million unique visitors monthly and 4 billion page views per year.
“This strategic partnership underscores NBC Universal’s serious commitment to invest in the future growth of iVillage,” Mrs. Zalaznick said.
Through this partnership with the Web's No. 1 community for women bloggers, NBC strenghtens its position on the women's media market.
BlogHer had gotten some media attention earlier this week when it started hosting Michelle Obama’s blog.
