Steve Jobs may be bowing out of Macworld, but Apple’s popular iPhone is hitting the world’s largest stage: Walmart.

The retail behemoth has announced that the iPhone 3G would begin selling in 2,500 stores as of yesterday.

“Our electronics associates have been preparing for many weeks for the arrival of iPhone 3G,” said Gary Severson, senior vice president of entertainment at Walmart.

Walmart will sell the black 8GB phone for $197, versus $199 at Apple retail stores. The retailer will sell the 16GB phone in black or white for $297, versus $299 at Apple. Both phone prices require a two-year service contract with AT&T.

Walmart also promises to match any retailer’s store price.
