Sabse Technologies has agreed to acquire Internet voice startup Jaxtr for an undisclosed sum, according to reports.
Mountain View, California-based Sabse is a Web conferencing company that offers a free service. Jaxtr delivers Internet-based phone calls that promise low international rates. The deal for Jaxtr was reported by PE Week.
Palo Alto, California-based Jaxtr emerged four years ago as a pioneer of VoIP, or voice over Internet Protocol, calling. It focused on making affordable long-distance phone calls from a PC via a mobile phone in what would later become a crowded market.
Jaxtr has raised a total of $20 million from investors including Mayfield Fund and August Capital. It also counted among early investors Rajeev Motwani, a Stanford University professor and computer scientist known for advising Sergey Brin and Larry Page in their creation of Google. Mr. Motwani was found dead in his pool on Friday in a suspected drowning accident.
Sabse technologies, which owns the Web conferencing site Sabsebolo.com, was founded in January of last year by Hotmail co-founder Sabeer Bhatia and serial entrepreneur Yogesh Patel.
Jaxtr boasts over 10 million users in 220 countries. Messrs. Bhatia and Patel will continue to run Jaxtr under its brand.
