Not for hire

An interesting email arrived yesterday. It was a recruiter, looking to fill a position at a well-known software company. Naturally, I was flattered. But I was also perplexed: the recruiter said she found my resume on the Passportaccess job board. The what? I'm not looking for a new gig now, and I certainly haven't posted my resume on any boards. Curious, and a little concerned -- what if my boss saw my resume and assumed I was looking? -- I got on the horn to Passportaccess.I talked to John Malone, the founder, who told me that while Passportaccess does indeed "scrape" resumes from a variety of sources (and mine is online, although out of date), it also solicits them from people who are actively looking for new jobs. Anyway, he adds, good recruiters do anything they can to find qualified candidates. Passportaccess just helps them do their job.Still, I have reservations about this aspect of Passportaccess's business. John did assure me that his company is strongly considering an opt-in strategy for its scraped resumes. Good move. Not only would this lower the number of irate calls from people like me, but it would also improve the quality of his database.
