Tendril Energized With $30M

Tendril on Tuesday said it picked up a $30 million third round of funding to boost its so-called smart grid business.

The Boulder, Colorado, company uses hardware components and software to help people monitor their home energy usage. Tendril is developing open standards technology that aims to help utility companies and consumers link various energy-monitoring devices.

“It’s really a testament to the momentum of the smart grid, energy management as a whole, and the power of open platforms and open standards,” Chief Operating Officer Tim Enwall said.

Tendril offers an Internet-based management system for people to track energy consumption of hot water heaters, lights, heating, and other systems. Such technology allows people to consume energy at off-peak hours for lower rates. For utilities, it can save money and reduce brownouts. Consumers can save as much as 50 percent on bills with the technology, according to Tendril.

VantagePoint Venture Partners led the funding round that included participation from RRE Ventures, Vista Ventures, and Good Energies, Europe’s largest clean tech investor.

The smart grid category is crowded. Rival smart grid companies include publicly traded Comverge and privately held GridPoint.
