Sony held on to its top spots in Japan for another week, with the PSP and PlayStation 3 coming out on top for handhelds and consoles, respectively.
According to Japanese media tracker Media Create, Sony’s PSP handheld sold the most with 41,187 units for the week ended April 26. Nintendo’s latest handheld iteration, the DSi, followed closely with 37, 495 units.
The PS3 outsold the other home consoles with 23,351 units. The console saw a surge in sales with the release of the Blu-Ray version of Final Fantasy VII Advent Children, which featured a playable demo of the highly anticipated Final Fantasy XIII.
Sales have slowed somewhat for the PS3, though, suggesting that the spike was largely due to the release of the demo, and that sales will settle down after another week or so.
Meanwhile, the Wii saw a slight boost in sales due to the re-release of Monster Hunter G, with 18,439 units sold. The Monster Hunter series is big in Japan, though Monster Hunter G has already graced two other systems (the PlayStation 2 and the PSP). However, there is a lot of anticipation for the Wii-exclusive Monster Hunter 3 (tri-), which will release in Japan in the summer.
Microsoft’s Xbox 360 trudged along after the Wii, with 7,016 units sold – lower than the previous week.
