Amazon Offers Casual Games

Internet retail giant Amazon.com wants a piece of the action from the sizzling video games business.

The Seattle, Washington, company on Tuesday launched the beta of its Game Downloads service, which features over 600 casual games for $10 or under.

Games include popular titles such as Jewel Quest, Airport Mania, and Mahjong Quest. Amazon also offers a free trial for every game.

As a promotion for the first week of the service’s launch, Amazon is also offering for free the full versions of Build-a-lot, Jewel Quest II, and The Scruffs.

The current focus on casual gaming places Amazon in the tough situation of having to compete with the multitude of casual, flash-based and, most importantly, free gaming portals such as Kongregate.

Should Amazon branch out into more traditional gaming in addition to the casual sphere, the company would be able to go head to head with WildTangent’s Orb game console, which is currently packed in with many computers.

For now,  Amazon's brand may be strong enough to pull some attention away from free gaming sites and elicit game purchases from its large customer base.
