Shell to Clean Air With Cansolv

Shell Global Solutions, a division of energy giant Shell, on Monday said that it has agreed to acquire clean energy company Cansolv Technologies.

Cansolv has developed a system to remove sulfur dioxide from combustion gas emissions. Although nationwide sulfur dioxide emissions have decreased significantly since the 80s, emissions are still problematic: sulfur dioxide, when combined with the nitrogen dioxide often found in internal combustion engines, can lead to acid rain.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We want to improve our capabilities to clean up contaminated gas and gases released during processing operations,” Shell Global Solutions President Greg Lewin said in a statement.

He also said that Cansolv’s technology will allow Shell to “reduce costs, accelerate technology development, and ultimately make carbon capture and storage commercially viable.”

Shell in September announced six biofuels research agreements with universities and labs to look into alternate ways to produce biofuels while cutting costs and boosting effectiveness.
