Users Go iPhone Only

The iPhone is hitting the mainstream, with lower-income users flocking to Apple’s digital delicacy and dropping their other devices, the new study says.

The All About iPhone report from comScore found that since June, iPhone adoption climbed 48 percent among those earning $25,000 to $50,000 and 46 percent among those earning $25,000 to $75,000.

ComScore’s also found that smart phone users earning $25,000 to $50,000 showed a 5 percent increase in accessing news and information through a mobile browser versus a 3 percent rise overall.

“These data indicate that lower-income mobile subscribers are increasingly turning to their mobile devices to access the Internet, e-mail and their music collections,” Mark Donovan, comScore senior analyst, said in a statement. “Smartphones, and the iPhone in particular, are appealing to a new demographic and satisfying demand for a single device for communication and entertainment, even as consumers weather the economy by cutting back on gadgets.”

Despite the rise in lower-income users, 43 percent of iPhone buyers earn more than $100,000 per year, comScore found. Their numbers grew 16 percent between June and August.

Aside from mobile Internet usage, the report found that lower-income iPhone owners showed a 7 percent increase in mobile e-mail and 5 percent rise in mobile music usage.

“As an additional household budget item, a $200 device plus at least $70 per month for phone service seems a bit extravagant for those with lower disposable income,” Jen Wu, comScore senior analyst said in a statement. “However, one actually realizes cost savings when the device is used in lieu of multiple digital devices and services, transforming the iPhone from a luxury item to a practical communication and entertainment tool.”
