Glassdoor, which invites users to pool knowledge on salary data, has closed on a $6.5 million B round led by Sutter Hill Ventures, the company said Tuesday.
Jim White, managing director of Sutter Hill, will take a seat on the Glassdoor board of directors in connection with the latest round, which included funding from prior investor Benchmark Capital.
Glassdoor, which competes with private equity-backed Vault.com, publicly traded Monster.com and a slew of other career sites in providing salary data and insider information about employers, offers free access to students and workers who provide salary data or a company review. The company, which launched its beta rollout in June, plans to generate revenue through online advertising.
The company claims more than 110,000 user contributions for 14,000 companies worldwide with salaries denominated in more than 100 currencies. Teaser access for a few marquee companies is provided to all comers.
For instance, visitors can view salary ranges for jobs at Yahoo, where a person identified as a software engineer said: the company has “lots of smart people, working at scale is challenging and fun…The perks aren't as good as google, but they are better than most. Free coffee and the SF shuttle are huge.” On the downside, the engineer groused: “Unstable, annoying politics and some senior people who really seem clueless. Projects that are dead out of the gate are left running until they flameout.”
When the Sausalito, California, company launched in 2007, the company’s co-founders, Robert Hohman, the chief executive, Tim Besse, vice president of marketing and Richard Barton, non-executive chairman, provided seed funding. Benchmark injected $3 million in its first venture round in November of that year.
"In the face of these tough economic times, this additional financing
allows us to continue to grow the Glassdoor community and advance our
product and business around the globe," Mr. Hohman said in a statement. "In this business climate, people are hungrier than ever for information about jobs and workplaces."
