Nintendo proved itself king of hardware once again, with its two gaming systems ruling August sales.
NPD Group on Thursday reported that more than 514,000 Nintendo DS systems sold and the Wii was close behind, selling more than 450,000 units. The PlayStation Portable followed with 253,000 units sold.
Microsoft’s Xbox 360 edged above the PlayStation 3, with 195,000 systems sold versus the PlayStation 3’s 185,000.
On the game titles front, the top three was all Madden. EA’s Madden 09 for the Xbox 360 was the top seller, with 1 million units sold. The PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2 versions sold over 640,000 units and over 420,000 units, respectively. The Wii version of Madden 09 sold more modestly, with a little over 115,000 units, placing it at No. 9 in August game title sales.
Nintendo still stayed strong in the charts, though. Following the three Maddens were Nintendo-developed Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii, and Wii Play.
