BlackBerry-MySpace Poor Cousin of iPhone-Facebook

Research In Motion on Thursday announced it will be offering a MySpace application for its BlackBerry smartphones.

The mobile version of the social-networking web site will “integrate MySpace’s main social-networking components with the BlackBerry platform,” the Canadian maker of the No. 1 selling smartphone in the U.S. said in a statement.

The news follows the launch of MySpace's redesigned mobile web site, which according to the Beverly Hills, California,  company, receives over two million daily mobile visits.

The application could potentially reach a pool of 16 million BlackBerry subscribers in the U.S. alone, but it is unclear if the media application will appeal to the more conservative, business-like BlackBerry owner.

A similar MySpace application was created for the more consumer-friendly iPhones in July.

The move, which comes a day after the announcement of the release of a smaller and friendlier device--the Pearl Flip 8820, represents another effort by the Canadian company to widen its customer pool from business users to a younger, hipper crowd.

RIM faces stiff competition from Apple, which entered the smartphone market in June last year and has already sold 9 million units of the popular iPhone.  MySpace is facing its own battle in trying to keep up with an ever-growing Facebook, which snatched away the No. 1 spot in June.
