Sony's Playstation to Offer Video on Demand

In an effort to get a piece of the emerging video on demand market, Sony announced it will offer a video downloading service through its PlayStation 3 videogame console.

“Consumers will have the ability to download full-length movies, television shows, and original … with nearly 300 full length movies and more than 1,200 TV episodes,” the company said on Tuesday.

This announcement comes a day after Microsoft and Netflix announced a deal that makes Netflix's 10,000 digital titles available on TV through the Xbox 360.

Sony said its service will let users rent or buy movies and rent television shows produced by major studios and production companies, including Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., and Sony Pictures, and watch them on TV.

Sony’s 300 movie titles library remain meager compared with  Xbox's 10,000 movies or the 5,000 titles offered by other video on demand companies such as Vudu.
