eCirkit's Uber-Social Site Dream Goes Beta

What would you say if somebody could offer you a Facebook/ Google/Firefox/Flickr/YouTube site all rolled into one?

That's the "high" vision of eCirkit. The startup, which launched a beta site Monday, wants to be your all-in-one social network, web portal, and web browser destination.

“Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, Flickr, iGoogle, Netvibes—any social network or browser is 100 percent” our competitor, eCirkit CEO Bradley Farrell said. “We’ve truly fused a portal together with a social network.”

Westbury, New York-based eCirkit has raised $1.9 million in angel funding this year. The company is shopping for $5 million in venture capital funding and plans to officially launch in January.

The Ajax-based startup boasts a web browser experience similar to that of a Windows desktop with moveable, resizable windows.

The social-networking side of eCirkit allows users to peruse profiles, upload photos and videos, send email, share favorite RSS feeds and bookmarks, chat on IM, leave remarks, contribute to forums, and sell items.

"It's hard to be all things to all people," Forrester Research analyst Jeremiah Owyang said.

On its own media network, Cirkitvision, the site also features "contest reality shows," where members have won prizes like a tattoo by tattoo artist Grime and a date with Playboy model Kaila Yu.

eCirkit’s combination of a social network with a broader spectrum site appealed to angel investor Marvin Schein, founder of Schein Dental Equipment and a director of healthcare product distributor Henry Schein. “It’s a novel concept,” he said.

Two years ago, Mr. Farrell had never even heard of MySpace. After finally visiting the site, “I was really disappointed in the look and feel of MySpace,” he said. “I thought, ‘What if I try to do this, but design it from an artist’s point of view.’”

The former tattoo artist sketched out his ideas on a napkin and then took his plans to tech professionals.

Mr. Farrell considers his lack of a high-tech background an advantage. When the programmers said that his design and functionality requests broke programming rules, his response was, “break those rules.”

eCirkit’s roughly 10,000 members largely come from Mr. Farrell’s community of professional skateboarders, tattoo artists, exotic car fanatics, and filmmakers.

Mr. Farrell hopes his site will appeal to users of all walks of life, but particularly the tech crowd. “It’s time to spread and let the technology speak for itself,” he said.
