Jamcracker, BroadSoft Forge Alliance

Internet phone software provider BroadSoft and Jamcracker on Tuesday announced plans to offer a blend of voice and data services for smaller businesses.

The deal calls for BroadSoft’s VoIP to be available to work with software-as-a-service applications from Jamcracker.

This brings together so-called unified communications, the integration of voice, data, video, and wireless under IP. It's been an elusive goal sought after by Cisco, Microsoft, Nortel, and Avaya for more than a decade.

“Part of the problem in the unified communications market is the lack of a clear, consistent market definition of what it is,” Forrester Research analyst Elizabeth Herrell said.

BroadSoft is a nine-year-old Gaithersburg, Maryland, company that sells products through phone companies
