By Scott MartinMicrosoft stood at the sideline as Apple hauled in iPod sales in the billions. No more. It wants in on the action (see Zune Player Enters iPod Market).
The software giant has stolen a page from Apple’s playbook, too: internal development of all aspects of software and hardware.
But can a company better-known for spreadsheets and office applications create fashionable devices? That’s yet to be seen. Most reviewers dinked the Zune for its bricklike size, funky finish, and dubious promise of music sharing.
While Microsoft may not have gotten the splash it wanted, it has pledged to stay in the game for years and pump in hundreds of millions of dollars, much the way it has done with Xbox (see
Zune Not Stealing Apple Faithful). Stay tuned.
