Totally YouTube-ular, PS3 Madness

Since Google’s March acquisition of Writely, tech pundits have gathered with mouths agape for scraps of news, and the company finally delivered on Wednesday, releasing its web-based Office challenger, inventively dubbed Docs & Spreadsheets. In a post authored using the service, broadband believer Om Malik opines on the news, dubbing the offering “immensely usable.” Google engineers have nearly lashed together an Office slayer, and as Om points out at the end of his post, a database and slide show app are all that remain before the beast’s completion.

Om isn’t the only one gushing. Web startup fiend and Google watcher Mike Arrington offered this positive prose in his own writeup: “clearly Google intends to keep listening to customers and putting out what they want.” While likely the highest profile, keep in mind that Google’s anti-Office offerings aren’t the only ones out there.

Meanwhile, plenty of tech folk are still mulling over YouTube’s new parent, many in response to the smug homemade video released by YouTube’s founders yesterday. C’mon, the combination is one of “two kings,” as Chad and Steve assert, right? Let’s break a few things down.

YouTube: 46 percent market share

Google Video: 11 percent market share

Unique monthly YouTube visitors: 19 million

Unique monthly Google visitors (all sites): 108 million

Google revenue: $6.1 billion (2005)

YouTube revenue: um, well…

Throwback: in February, Weblogs guru Jason Calacanis wrote “YouTube is not a real business (or an innovative business).” Real or not, Chat and Steve are now pretty damn rich.

Game Crazy

Since Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo’s Wii will find their way into greasy gamer mitts starting next month, the pre-launch frenzy is shifting into high gear. After releasing a notice on Monday, Tuesday saw U.S. retailer GameStop/EBGames taking names (and $100 deposits) to reserve units in the initial shipment. Shockingly, there were more gamers than available systems and stores went through their measly allocations (apparently 8 to 16 units each) in minutes. All gaming-all-the-time site Joystiq offered up both West coast and East coast coverage of the bleary-eyed nerdery, while Kotaku gave us some news that’s not-inherently-surprising-but-interesting-nonetheless: most of these guys plan to hawk the things on eBay for a pretty penny. The insanity is already upon us: $1,850, people!

IGN has some more pictures of a lineup near Los Angeles. Sighting: a female in line! Poor thing. If you can, head to Japan. According to Kotaku, reserving a PS3 in the land of the rising sun ain’t no thang.
