Silicon is poured into blocks, cooled, and cut with wire, making silicon bricks such as these. More cells are being made from the same amount of silicon as technology allows companies to slice wafers thinner. Two years ago, SolarWorld’s wafers were 340 microns thick; now, the company makes wafers 210 microns thick, says Peter Woditch, CEO of SolarWorld subsidiary Deutsche Solar.
