Magazine Preview: The New World of AI

Artificial intelligence (AI) may not have lived up to the visions of Sci-Fi geeks, but it has gone underground into a lot of day-to-day systems. Many people think of AI as a high-flying 1980s tech concept that crashed and burned back in the early 1990s after a good deal of hype. The fact is, AI technology has become pervasive in much of the software we use today. Red Herring shows you how AI has invaded your daily life in our August 22 cover story, “AI Knows It’s Out There,” on newsstands Monday. Here is a peek into the rest of our lineup, which appears along with our regular features:

·          Palm Pilot pioneer Jeff Hawkins is concentrating on creating tools for developing artificial-intelligence applications. Read about it in “Jeff Hawkins’ AI Obsession.”

·          “Fueling the Biodiesel Fire” tracks how alternatives to petroleum are catching on around the globe. Arab sheiks, Texas truckers, and Chinese restaurateurs are jumping on the biodiesel bandwagon.
